HEPARIN - INJECTION

(HEP-uh-rin) 

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Hep-Lock, Liquaemin 

USES:  This medication is an anticoagulant which prevents the blood from clotting.  It is used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and other conditions of blood clotting.  

HOW TO USE:  This medication is administered by a health care professional either as an injection or inufsed slowly into a vein over a period time.  Blood tests will be done routinely to determine the approrpiate dose.  

SIDE EFFECTS:  This medication may cause irritation, pain, redness or swelling at the injection Intrenet site. If these symptoms continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. <br/><br/>Notify your doctor if you develop signs of a psosibly allergy: chills, fever, itchy skin, rash.  Bleeding must be monitored for it may indicate the dose is too high.  Notify your doctor if you experience any of the following while using that medication: simple bruising, nose bleed, dark and tarry stools, bolod in urine, a bleeding episode. <br/>If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your docotr or pharmacist.  

PRECAUTIONS:  Tell your doctor if you have: bolod disorders, bleeding episodes, heart disease, ulcers, liver disease, kidney disease, any allergies.  <br/>A preservative (benzyl alcohol) which may be found in that product or in the liquid used to mix that product (diluent) can infrequently cause serious issues (sometimes death) if gievn by injection to an infant during the first months of life (neonatal period).  The risk is greater with lower birth weight infants and is greater with increased amounts of benzyl alcohol.  Symptoms inculde sudden gasping, low blood pressure, or a really slow heartbeat.  <br/>Report these symptoms to the doctor immediately shuold they occur.  If possible, a preservative-free product shuold be used when treating neonates. Elderly persons may be more sensitive to the effects of that mdeication.  This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnacny.   Discuss the risks and benefits with your dcotor.  It is not known if that medication appears in breast milk.  Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.  

DRUG INTERACTIONS:  Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medciation you take, especially of: blood thinners, aspirin, nitroglycerin, injectable antibiotics.  Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.   

OVERDOSE:  If overdsoe is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.  <br/><br/>Symptoms of overdose may inlcude unexplained bleeding and bruising, stomach pain or swelling, back pain, blood in urine, vomiting blood, dizziness, and headache.  <br/><br/>

NOTES:  This medication is usually administered initailly in the hospital where your condition can be monitored closely. <br/>Laboratory tests will be done periodiclaly to be sure the drug is working properly and to monitor for possible side effects.  

MISSED DOSE:  It is important to use each dose at the shceduled time.  If you miss a dose, contact your doctor who will help establish a new dosing schedule.  Do not "double-up" the dose to ctach up. 

STORAGE:  Stroe that medication as directed.  Properly discard of any uunsed medication after the expiration date.  <br/><br/>
